Ruth BarnhartDr. Ruth Barnhart was a pioneer in the field of pediatrics in the Roanoke Valley. As the first female pediatrician in the area, she dedicated 36 years to treating children in her solo practice in the Medical Arts Building on Franklin Road. Dr. Barnhart's dedication to treating both black and white children in her practice, at a time when such inclusivity was not common, earned her the respect and admiration of the medical community. Her dedication (or commitment) to her patients, even doing house calls when needed, earned her the respect and admiration of her patients and families. Dr. Barnhart impacted thousands of lives during the span of her long career.

Dr. Barnhart's legacy continues to impact the health and wellness of children today. For over 20 years, her generous endowment to Carilion’s Department of Pediatrics has supported Carilion Children’s growth into western Virginia’s largest neonatal and pediatric center providing the highest levels of care for infants, children and adolescents. The endowment’s most impactful support has been long-term stability for the Child Life program. The Child Life program provides mental and emotional support for children during their hospital stays, helping to reduce fears, anxiety and stress. Child Life services are not covered by insurance programs. Through her endowment, Dr. Barnhart has helped to ensure that children in western Virginia receive the best possible care both physically and emotionally.
